How Water Birthed my book: Return to the Womb of Life

Why I Wrote Return to the Womb of Life

There are books we decide to write.
And there are books that write us.
Return to the Womb of Life belongs to the second kind.

For many years, I believed I was simply gathering experiences: walking the sacred lands of Sainte-Baume, listening to the whispers of the Magdalene, swimming in the waters of the Mediterranean, sitting in silence beside the sea, and following an ever-deepening call toward Water and the mysteries She carries.

Only later did I begin to realise that these experiences were not separate threads.

They were part of a single journey.

A journey of remembrance.

A journey home to the waters that had always been calling me.

The book did not begin as a plan.

It began as a longing.

A longing to remember why Water had always spoken so profoundly to my heart, womb, body, soul—and life.

A longing to discover the deeper meaning of the near-death experience that transformed my childhood and opened a doorway into questions far greater than myself.

A longing to understand why the sea felt more like home than any place I had ever lived.

And a longing to enter more deeply into the mysterious presence of the Deep Feminine that seemed to accompany me through every stage of my life.

As I followed these questions, the journey deepened.

The Magdalene appeared as a living companion and guide.

The sacred lands of Southern France revealed themselves as places of remembrance rather than history.

The Mediterranean Sea became a teacher, a living presence and being whose voice, guidance, and companionship I came to feel all around me—and at times even within me.

And the whales emerged as guardians of an ancient memory still alive within the waters of our world—and perhaps within our own waters as well.

What began as personal exploration gradually revealed itself as a path far wider than my own story.

The more deeply I listened, the more I realised that Water was not merely something I loved.

She was a living presence calling me into relationship.

A presence carrying memory.

A presence carrying wisdom.

A presence carrying transmission.

A presence carrying Life Herself.

Writing this book became an act of devotion.

A practice of feeling.

A practice of listening.

Listening to my own story.

Listening to the stories of those who came before me.

Listening to the wisdom carried by the body.

Listening to the sea.

Listening to the silent teachings of the whales.

Listening for the remembrance moving through it all.

Page by page, Return to the Womb of Life revealed itself as more than a memoir.

It became a sanctuary of remembrance.

A place where personal story, spiritual journey, poetic transmission, and lived experience could meet.

A place where readers might pause long enough to hear the whisper of their own inner waters, to feel them from deep within, and perhaps remember what they have always known.

Today, I see that this book is not only a book.

It is the heart and root of all that is emerging through this path of remembrance.

The source from which future transmissions, experiences, and conversations are gently and organically unfolding.

Yet its deepest purpose remains beautifully simple.

To invite us home.

Home to our bodies.

Home to Water.

Home to the Earth.

Home to the living world.

And perhaps, most importantly, home to the remembrance that we have never truly been separate from any of it.

With warmth and devotion,

AnuMa Jackie Heydemann
